One of the questions we’re asked is, “how does engine type define your driving experience?” Well, your engine could be considered the heart of your vehicle. Your engine uses a number of cylinders to direct power to your wheels. There is a wide range of engines out there, however, nearly all fall into one of three categories: four-cylinder, V6, and V8.

Each powertrain type is defined by the number of cylinders that they’re equipped with, as you may have already expected. Although, it is important to note that when you have more cylinders, you’ll need more fuel to power them.

So, for instance, a V8 engine is going to require more fuel for power than a four-cylinder engine. As a result, almost all four-cylinder engines are going to be more fuel efficient than V8 or V8s. At the same time, four-cylinder engines typically don’t offer the same range of horsepower and torque.

So, which is better? Well, it all comes down to what you want your vehicle to be able to do. If you want something fuel efficient, a four-cylinder powerhouse might be a solid fit. On the other hand, if you’re looking to experience the power of something like a RAM truck, you’ll likely want to invest in a V6 or V8.
